Annual Spaghetti Dinner

Enos Martin and Tom Harp volunteered at the Allentown Rescue Mission’s 13th Annual Spaghetti Dinner, held at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown. Enos and Tom both worked the 3:15 PM to 6:00 PM shift, Enos working as a drink attendant and Tom as a seating host. There was a lot of prep work involved before doors opened to the public at 4:00 PM. There were dozens of volunteers waiting for guests to enjoy a delicious free will offering meal with spaghetti and meatballs, salad, rolls and dessert. Those arriving early had no problem getting a table for parties up to eight. By 5:00 PM however, tables were filling up and it was a logistical challenge trying to find seating for parties of three or more.

When our shift was over, all tables were filled, lines snaked out of the church gym down the hallway and nearly to the front door. Donation jars were brimming with cash. Bobby Gunther Walsh, who makes the meatballs every year using his “secret recipe” was the master of ceremonies, and he was proud to announce that WAEB’s on-air fundraising efforts broke all records this year.
